Kevin Burke & Cal Scott
Irish fiddle virtuoso Kevin Burke and Portland guitarist and composer Cal Scott will present the world premier of their new work, “The Irish Session Suite,” in concert at The Aladdin Theater on Saturday, March 6th. The Suite is an exciting new musical collaboration melding classical and folk traditions. It will be a highlight of the duo's brand new album, Suite, to be available at the concert for the first time.

Kevin and Cal are two of Portland's most distinguished acoustic musicians. Known for his vibrant, expressive style, Burke is rightly considered one of the world's leading Irish fiddlers. Scott is known for his work with the Trail Band as well as producer and composer of more than 40 PBS filmscores. Together they play an unforgettable mix of music both elegant and earthy, steeped in Irish and embracing French, bluegrass, and Scottish traditions.

Their latest project, “The Irish Session Suite,” is a stunning new score of ten traditional Irish tunes arranged for string quartet by Cal Scott. Burke’s fiddle takes the lead accompanied by three of the Northwest’s finest musicians: Andrew Ehrlich, violin, Concertmaster of the Portland Chamber Orchestra; Anna Schaum, viola, formerly of the Oregon Symphony; and Justin Kagan, cello, formerly of the New York Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. The music moves through an 18th century air, a 19th century jig and a rousing contemporary reel. Kevin and Cal will also be playing additional pieces from their repertoire including tunes from their new CD.

For more than 30 years Kevin Burke’s recordings and performances have reflected his life- long love affair with the music of Ireland, the diversity of his musical tastes and his refusal to be restricted by what are often seen as insurmountable musical boundaries. “The Irish Session Suite” continues this musical journey by putting traditional tunes into a classical setting in a way that complements both styles and asks neither style to compromise.

The Suite's unofficial “sneak” preview concert last October at The Old Church was a resounding success by any standard. After the quartet's performance, the standing-room only crowd of over 300 erupted into standing ovations and calls for encores.

Please come along and hear for the first time the latest challenging project from this exceptionally talented duo. It could easily prove to be one of the decade’s most exciting and groundbreaking musical collaborations!
