Afro-Cuban All Stars
Afro-Cuban All Stars
Following in the footsteps of legendary Cuban orchestras Los Van Van, the Buena Vista Social Club, and Irakere, the Afro-Cuban All Stars have become one of the best-known and most successful Cuban orchestras performing today. Lead by bandleader, producer, and arranger Juan de Marcos, the All Stars ensemble concept spans three generations of musicians, and promotes the full range of Cuban musical styles.

De Marcos’s musical journey began in the early 1990’s and he has never looked back since. Juan de Marcos, founder and bandleader of Sierra Maestra, was also the man behind the legendary Buena Vista Social Club recordings. The Buena Vista Social Club recordings were born through De Marcos’ efforts to rediscover the neglected stars of Cuba’s golden age of music. The initial Buena Vista Social Club recording put together by De Marcos and Ry Cooder went on to become a Grammy-winning international bestseller, and was made into an Oscar-nominated film by celebrated German director Wim Wenders. The successful project lead to the explosion of global interest in traditional Cuban music and reintroduced a whole new generation to Cuban Son, Rumba, Bolero, and Canción.

Over the years many of the band’s musicians have become international stars, including such brilliant performers as Rubén González, Ibrahim Ferrer, and Guillermo Rubalcalva. The four-time Grammy nominated band’s roster has changed over the years, but the results have always been the same – the finest in Cuban musicianship. Recently Juan de Marcos has been featuring the next generation of Cuba’s most remarkable young musicians, emphasizing the ongoing evolution of the music, and not the past.

With the All Stars, de Marcos has developed a concept more than simply creating a band. His ensemble approach has allowed him to expand a musical creative range by adding contemporary styles of Cuban music, as well as a fluid approach to adjusting the orchestra’s line up.

The current line-up of the Afro-Cuban All Stars consists of the finest Cuban expatriate musicians in the world today, all alumni of some of Cuba’s greatest bands. This group has been touring internationally since Winter/Spring 2009, which includes the forty-city breakthrough tour of the United States. The band will return to the USA in Summer 2010 and again in Spring 2011. Juan De Marcos is keeping busy working on his upcoming CD release, Breaking the Rules, set for release in early 2011.
